Economic Gardening / GIS Seminar
Date: Tuesday, May 7, 2013
Time: 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Location: Pueblo Rawlings Library – Ryals Room (100 E. Abriendo Ave., Pueblo)
Presenter: Chris Markuson, GISP, Pueblo County GIS Manager
Research shows that the vast majority of job growth comes from small businesses, yet for decades, Pueblo’s economic development strategies have focused on recruiting large manufacturers to town. In an attempt to change this trend, Chris Markuson established an Economic Gardening program through his Pueblo County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) office. Economic Gardening focuses on assisting entrepreneurial businesses already in Pueblo County, as opposed to recruiting businesses to relocate. By supplying local businesses advanced market analysis using GIS, and by bringing together entrepreneurs, community resources and government in a collaborative fashion, entrepreneurs are given tools they need to succeed. Local entrepreneurial businesses pay a livable wage, offer employee benefits and are not tempted to relocate when the cost of doing business is cheaper elsewhere.
The need for GIS data in this effort is essential. Small businesses looking to expand often make major decisions about the direction of their company with little to no market information, risking their future on intuition. Because of this, small businesses frequently make costly mistakes and
go out of business, even when their business concept is sound. To help, we use GIS to identify customized core and developmental customer segments for businesses, and to analyze disparate, complex market conditions. This allows business owners to visualize strategies to expand and compete nationwide in a context they can understand and implement. Utilizing annually-updated demographic data, spending preference information and psychographic data, we have helped numerous businesses in Pueblo grow their profits far beyond their expectations. And, we have found that businesses seeking funding have a much greater chance of securing financing when their business plans are based upon GIS-centric market research.
Registration is required! To register, please contact the Southern Colorado SBDC by phone at 719-549-3224, by email SBDC@pueblocc.edu or online www.coloradosbdc.org. All workshops are free and open to the public courtesy of seminar sponsor Ent Business Banking!

Is your organization prepared to handle the planned or unexpected departure of a key staff person? What innovative methods is your organization using to attract new talent to the work of your organization? Join Colorado Nonprofit Association, Pathfinder Solutions, and The Bridgespan Group in a discussion about the state of talent development within our state and national nonprofit sector. Medicare and Medicaid are viewed as easy fraud targets by a few bad health care providers. While most doctors and health providers are honest, one or two percent see these multi-billion dollar programs as easy targets to obtain payment they aren’t entitled to. Medicare and Medicaid fraud costs you money. It increases the amounts you must pay in coinsurance, increase taxpayer costs, raises the price of Medigap coverage, increases the Medicare premium you pay, and helps prevent the addition of new Medicare services such as prescription drug coverage. Medicare and Medicaid depend on you to tell them about fraud. They pay bills submitted on your behalf-if you don’t tell them you didn’t get the service billed, or they are billing for a more expensive service than they provided, they won’t know they shouldn’t have paid the bill. In addition, we will be sharing information regarding grievances and filing appeals.

The development of South Pueblo came about after General William Jackson Palmer purchased forty-eight thousand acres of the Nolan Land Grant. South Pueblo was laid out in the late nineteenth century with the middle portion bordering on the west by Abriendo Ave and the bluff above the Arkansas River on the east. This area with its meandering; curving streets was called “Corona Park” by General Palmer, meaning “Crown” in Spanish. Corona Park later became known as the Blocks.
Join us for a power point presentation as we share stories and pictures of the people, their homes and businesses along the winding streets of Corona Park.

The Producers is a musical adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks’ 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics written by Brooks and music composed by Brooks and arranged by Glen Kelly and Doug Besterman. As in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. The humor of the show draws on ridiculous accents, characters of homosexuals and Nazis, and many show business in-jokes.
